M1C Key Info

International Reading Association

The IRA is a professional organization created to advocate effective reading instruction, encourage research on reading, and promote the act of reading itself.

The International Reading Association recognizes that there are six areas of reading that should be addressed and integrated into fluent reading:

  1. Phonemic awareness
  2. Word identification skills (including phonics)
  3. Vocabulary and background knowledge
  4. Fluency
  5. Comprehension strategies
  6. Motivation

The IRA's six areas of reading are more comprehensive and include all of the NRP's essential components. Therefore, for the purpose of this course, we will focus on the IRA's essential components of reading.

Feel free to review the reading standards for your state or school district. You will find the essential components of reading meet or even exceed the IRA's standards.
